Endocrinology-Metabolism and Nuclear Medicine Specialist

Dr. Krishna Pinnamaneni has over 50 years of continuing medical education and experience. He entered Medical School in 1965 and graduated in 1970 with MBBS from Guntur Medical College of the Andhra University, one of the premier medical schools in South India; and he continued his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), another premier medical research and teaching center in New Delhi, India. Then Dr. Pinnamaneni, after U. S. training again in Internal Medicine in Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan, was trained at the University of Chicago (UC), Pritzker School of Medicine and Billings Hospital in Endocrinology & Metabolism. Dr. Pinnamaneni’s research work at UC included suppressor T-Cell function in thyroid autoimmunity, incidence of pre-Grave’s disease gene transmission in siblings, thyroid hormone binding to human cell (lymphocyte) nuclear (DNA) receptors, external irradiation associated thyroid cancer and cost effective outcomes of outpatient low dose 131I ablative therapy in thyroid cancer only to mention a few. While as a junior member of the faculty (Instructor in Medicine) at the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSOM), St. Louis, MO, Dr. Pinnamaneni received additional training in Metabolic Bone Diseases (MBD) and Metabolic Renal Stone Diseases (MRSD).

The Barnes & Jewish Hospitals of WUSOM in St. Louis awarded Dr. Pinnamaneni the Simmons Scholarship for Research in Endocrinology and Metabolism with emphasis in Bone and Mineral Metabolism. His basic research included the recognition of Bone Demineralization effects of circulating thyroid hormones in excess; and he worked also on evolution of bone cells (Osteocytes, Osteoblasts and Osteoclasts) as well as hormone receptors on bone cells. In collaboration with Drs. Ronald Burde (Neuro-Ophthalmologist) and Morton Smith (Ophthalmic Pathologist) of Ophthalmology division at WUSOM, Dr. Pinnamaneni studied then (circa 1979) experimental drugs such as Methotrexate in thyroid eye disease. For over three years (1980 to 1983) Dr. Pinnamaneni was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California at both the San Francisco campus and Davis Medical Centers; and he was also the Chief of the Endocrine Section at Travis United States Air-Force (USAF) major (largest) Teaching and Training Medical Center under U S Air force Medical Airlift Command (MAC) in California.

Dr. Pinnamaneni has authored/co-authored several research and clinical publications in Endocrinology. For three years he held a Board member position on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) from 1997 to 2000. Dr. Pinnamaneni strongly promoted democratic principles and policies at AACE while he was a board member; and also actively participated as a reviewer of some of the AACE National Guidelines, in the care of various Endocrine-Metabolic Diseases. Dr. Pinnamaneni received a clinical teacher recognition (circa 1979) for bedside clinical diagnosis classes to medical students and residents at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. Dr. Pinnamaneni received a much sought out USAF teaching ribbon (circa 1981) as one of the best teaching staff members for the MAC (Military Airlift command) medical residency training programs. Dr. Pinnamaneni was also selected, as a medical school admissions committee member during 1981-82, by the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at The Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Pinnamaneni is certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology & Metabolism in USA and Canada.

As a formally trained Metabolic-Molecular imaging or Nuclear Medicine specialist with about 40 years of experience, Dr. Pinnamaneni is also the founding Director of an outpatient Nuclear Isotope center that is licensed by Arizona Nuclear Regulatory Commission for about 35 years. He provides a complete spectrum of Metabolic Molecular/Nuclear Medicine Outpatient imaging services in Arizona. Dr. Pinnamaneni is one of the Endocrinologists that started Office Thyroid (neck) Ultrasonography and promoted Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (TFNA) biopsy in Southwestern USA for over 35 years; and since then Dr. Pinnamaneni performed and/or interpreted several thousand thyroid/neck ultrasounds and performed several thousand TFNAs in his outpatient practice. Dr. Pinnamaneni has been also working with Dr. John Abele, an expert Thyroid Cytopathologist in western USA for over 35 years, to benefit patients.

Dr. Pinnamaneni was trained by and/or worked with either in research and/or in clinical settings with world renowned Endocrinologists, Leslie J. DeGroot, MD (Scientist and Endocrine 3 volumes Text book’s Chief Editor); Samuel Refetoff, MD (Scientist and Discoverer of Refetoff’s Syndrome - a thyroid hormone resistance disease); Louis V. Avioli, MD (Scientist and MBD Text book author) ; William H. Daughaday, MD (Scientist and Discoverer of Somatomedins or IGFs); Peter H. Forsham, MD (Scientist and a Pioneer in Diabetes and Adrenal research as well as Dr. Forsham was the first scientist in the world to introduce, and proved, that the daily multiple insulin injections are more closer to a physiological way to treat Diabetes); John H. Karam, MD (Scientist and a discoverer of Insulin resistance in Obesity); Hibbard E. Williams, MD (Scientist and MRSD Text book author); and reputable Endocrine surgeons Edwin L. Kaplan, MD (at UC) and Orlo H. Clark, MD (at UCSF) as well as with an incomparable Neurosurgical scientist and Neurosurgeon Charles B. Wilson, MD at UCSF (one of the Pioneers and world authorities in Trans-spheroidal Pituitary surgery and author of the Text book). Dr. Pinnamaneni considers it as a privilege to work at the above noted institutions until he came into medical practice in Arizona (circa 1983). Dr. Pinnamaneni Endocrinology/Metabolism and Metabolic Molecular/Nuclear Medicine private practice was inaugurated by Peter H. Forsham, MD, an internationally renowned Endocrinology-Metabolism Scientist and one of the distinguished mentors of Dr. Pinnamaneni.

Dr. Pinnamaneni initiated and established a partnership with then Samaritan (now Banner) Health Services, a large U S Hospital corporation, and built the first outpatient MRI Center in Arizona in 1984; and he held the position of Permanent Chairman of the Board of Directors of that partnership. Dr. Pinnamaneni was also the first one to bring into Arizona Healthcare, then new technology (circa 1983), to measure the Bone Density (Bone Mineral Analysis) in an outpatient/office setting to evaluate metabolic bone diseases; and he was interviewed on National TV and by local News media. Dr. Pinnamaneni co-chaired the intense task to develop and start the first U. S. Bone Densitometry training course for Endocrinologists under AACE certification programs. Dr. Pinnamaneni also served as a member and consultant on Endocrinology Plenary sessions and on many Health Care Insurance and Hospital Committees in Arizona, California (for Department of Defense), Missouri, Illinois and Michigan. Dr. Pinnamaneni has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Master’s Degree in Health Service Administration (MHSA) from Arizona State University.
